What do you need to rent a car if Turkey is on your itinerary?
While Turkey has its own local rules that may vary, certain requirements are standard. Use this checklist to ensure a smooth rental experience.
Valid Driver’s License and IDP: Your standard driver’s license from your country is the first step. For international travel, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended and often required—especially if your license isn’t in Latin script.
Minimum Age Requirements: Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21, and many set the minimum at 25. Drivers under 25 should expect a Young Driver Fee. Some locations may also have an upper age limit (e.g., 75+).
Credit Card for Security Deposit: A valid credit card in the main driver’s name is the global standard. It’s used to hold a security deposit for potential charges such as tolls, fuel, or damage. Debit cards are rarely accepted for the deposit.
